CURP Validation: What is it and how to do it? - Emptor
The CURP is an official Mexican document that aims to identify natural persons. It is mandatory for all Mexican citizens and its validation is essential to carry out various legal procedures, such as registration with the National Electoral Institute (INE), civil registration or obtaining a passport.
The Unique Population Registry Key, better known as CURP, is an instrument used to individually register all inhabitants of Mexico, both nationals and foreigners. The CURP contains 18 elements of an alphanumeric code; 16 of them are the first letter and first internal vowel of the first surname, the first letter of the second surname, the first letter of the first name, the year, month and day of the date of birth; gender and the two letters of the place of birth according to the code of the Federal Entity.
These last six data are fixed and immutable throughout the life of the registered person. Then, the first internal consonants of each of the surnames and name are included, and finally, the last two digits that are assigned by the National Population Registry.
The CURP has become an indispensable document to process various procedures, both in the public and private sectors. Some of the most common are:
- Application for a voter’s credential
- Enrollment in Social Security
- Opening a bank account
- Processing a mortgage loan
- Applying for a loan
Obtaining the CURP
To obtain the CURP, interested parties can go to the offices of the National Population Registry (RNP) or request it through the website of the National Electoral Institute (INE). It is recommended to keep a copy of the document in digital and/or printed format, as it may be required at some point.
The CURP is personal and non-transferable, so no one else can use it. In case of loss or theft, you must go to the RNP offices to request a duplicate. If the CURP has been modified or altered, the interested party must file a complaint with the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR).
The CURP has an indefinite validity; however, it is recommended to update it every time the address is changed or any of the data that appears on it is modified. The update is free and can be done at the RNP offices or through the internet.
Use of the CURP
To carry out any procedure that requires the CURP, it is necessary to have a copy of the original document or its duplicate. In some cases, the CURP can also be presented in digital format, as long as it is valid and has been issued by the INE.
Once you have the CURP, it is important to keep it in a safe and accessible place, as it will be necessary to carry out various legal procedures. Likewise, it is important to verify that the data that appears on the document is correct, since an error in the CURP can cause problems when carrying out procedures or accessing certain benefits.
Validation of CURP on the RENAPO portal
The RENAPO portal is a web tool that aims to facilitate the procedures and processes related to the CURP. Through this, people can request corrections, perform searches and validations, and even recover their Unique Population Registry Key (CURP) number and code in case they do not remember them. This portal is provided by the General Directorate of Population Registry and Personal Identification.
Due to identity theft, which is a major problem in Latin America, Human Resources and Compliance departments use tools like Emptor to perform background checks or identity validation to ensure that candidates, suppliers, customers and partners are who they claim to be.
A problem with a solution
The use and application of artificial intelligence allows the use of tools that, in a few minutes, verify a person’s identity through APIs that connect to different sources of real-time consultation and are constantly updated. The benefit in terms of cost, time and money is significant when implementing these tools within organizations.
